The practice was founded by an auctioneer Stephen Murrell who took a lease of premises in Clerkenwell from Lady Day 1761. He practised as sole principal for some years and took a prominent part in promoting the profession. He was for example a signatory to a resolution in May 1799 following 'a select meeting of auctioneers' at Piazza Coffee House when it was resolved 'that a society be formed of the most respectable gentlemen of the profession' for which a Mr Christie was proposed as chairman.

The firm later changed its name to Murrell and Scobell and continued as such until Cuthbert lake joined R W Scobell in partnership in about 1897 bringing with him the management of estates throughout London that had been acquired by his grandfather Benjamin Coote.

The firm was by then in Bucklersbury in the City of London and remained there until 1908. Cuthbert Lake then moved to Stone Buildings, Lincoln's Inn where he was appointed surveyor to the Honourable Society of Lincoln's Inn and began practising as Cuthbert Lake & Co.

Cuthbert Lake was a well known and prominent member of the profession and he died in 1947. By then he had been joined in partnership by Arnold Ford and Anthony Clapham who continued the practice following Cuthbert Lake's death.
